Essendon Bombers v Adelaide Crows tips and betting preview for July 9 2021, AFL round 17

Welcome to our Essendon v Adelaide betting tips, prediction and odds analysis for their AFL round 17 clash being played at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Both of these teams are in finals contention, but Essendon is closer to the eight and looms as the favourite for this clash, just six premiership points behind eighth-placed GWS.

The Bombers ($1.32) are almost unbackable at this price, while Adelaide ($3.41) are regarded as outsiders. The line has been drawn at 19.5 and will be tempting for Crows fans.

The Bombers will again be missing key players for this contest, with Dylan Shiel (knee) and Andrew McGrath (knee) both some time away from returning. The time frame on Aaron Francis’ return from mental health issues is also yet to be clarified.

Adelaide is close to full strength but will be sweating on the fitness of Taylor Walker, after the key forward injured his neck in their 52-point loss to Brisbane last outing. Luke Brown is also under a cloud with a slight groin problem.

Essendon v Adelaide tips

Our AFL betting expert has examined the markets and found some value Essendon v Adelaide tips:

Adelaide +19.5 in line betting

Adelaide has surprised many this season and an upset on the road here against Essendon would not shock. The Crows’ may not have the star power of other clubs, but they have some serious young talent honing their craft, not unlike their opposition. The Bombers have been up for several weeks and we think, particularly in the absence of Dyson Heppell, they could be vulnerable.

Rory Sloane to reach 25 possessions

Essendon might have a midfield group that rack up cricket scores in terms of possession count, but they can also let good players run rampant going the other way. Rory Sloane might not be as prolific as he used to be, but he has reached 25 touches several times this season. His last two weeks have netted 19 and 23 and we think he’s exceptional value at $2.63 to reach 25 against the Bombers, with this price available at Topsport

Essendon v Adelaide prediction 9/7

It is hard to tip against the Bombers in this one given their strong form, albeit form that is unlikely to carry them to September. To put it bluntly these two teams are evenly matched and both have produced outstanding footy at times this season. The Crows are just one win behind the Bombers and have arguably been more consistent. While we think the $3.41 on offer for the Crows to win is far too long given the clubs respective injuries, we are going to stick with the Bombers to win a close one. Our final Essendon v Adelaide prediction? Bombers by four points.
