Port Adelaide v Melbourne betting tips for July 8 round 17 AFL

Welcome to our Port Adelaide v Melbourne betting tips, prediction and odds analysis for their AFL round 17 clash at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.

This clash will pit the fourth-placed Port Adelaide against second-placed Melbourne in a match that will go a long way to determining the make-up of the top four.

The Power ($1.79) are the favourites for this clash, but the Demons ($2.07) are finding some fans among punters, despite their mixed form in recent weeks. The $1.90 line has been set at a paltry 2.5 points with a leading Australian online bookmaker

Melbourne has not beaten the Power since round 18, 2017, with the Adelaide team winning their last three encounters. But it’s worth noting that the Demons are a different proposition this season, particularly since their 51-point shellacking at the hands of the Power in round nine last year.

The Demons are unlikely to tamper too much with the team that lost to GWS last outing, but they will again consider bringing in recruit and key forward Ben Brown after a strong run of VFL form.  The former North Melbourne spearhead looks the logical man to fix their scoring and conversion woes and give aerial support to Tom McDonald and youngster Luke Jackson.

Port Adelaide suffered a brutal blow in their 34-point win over Hawthorn last outing with Kane Farrell rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and facing a year on the sidelines. They are also some time away from exciting forwards Robbie Gray and Orazio Fantasia returning from their respective injuries.

Port Adelaide v Melbourne tips

Our AFL betting expert has examined the markets and found some value Port Adelaide vs Melbourne tips:

Over/Under betting tips

Each of the last six clashes between Port Adelaide and Melbourne have been under the match total points mark and we again expect this game to be closely fought. The Power and Demons are both defensively sound, but have had trouble scoring at times. The over/under mark has been set at 149.5 with the top betting sites

Christian Petracca to have 20 touches and kick 2 goals

The Melbourne gun has had his influence curtailed to some extent in recent weeks, but this is a very important clash for his club. He’s likely to receive close attention from the Power, but players like Petracca, with an ability to hit the scoreboard, are hard to stop. We think Petracca to have 20 touches and kick 2+ goals is reasonably safe for a bet of this type. It is paying about $4 with Ladbrokes Australia and you should be able to get $6.50 if you include Melbourne winning in your same game multi.

Port Adelaide v Melbourne prediction 8/7/2021

We can see this clash being exceptionally close and tough around the clinches, with the likes of Clayton Oliver and Oliver Wines going toe-to-toe through the midfield. The Demons are on the road, but we think the GWS performance may release the shackles and we expect them to play a much better brand of football this week. While the tribet betting market (where either team can win under a certain amount) is a live option for this game, we can smell an upset brewing in South Australia. Our final Melbourne v Port Adelaide prediction? Demons by six points.
