Geelong v Collingwood betting tips and prediction; AFL rd 7 preview

AFL round 12 odds 2021 - covid fixture update

The Cats and Magpies clash in the unfamiliar surroundings of Optus Stadium in Perth to kick off AFL round 7 on Thursday night.

With no matches in Victoria for the second straight weekend (and none due for the foreseeable future), this is the first match in WA since March 22 when the West Coast Eagles opened their season with a 27-point win against Melbourne.

Geelong and Collingwood have built a strong rivalry over the past 15 years, and both teams go into this after returning to the winners’ list in round six. At the time of writing, a crowd of up to 30,000 is also allowed for this game.

The Cats upstaged the high-flying Brisbane Lions by 27 points at the SCG last Thursday night, while the Magpies beat their bogy side Hawthorn by 32 points last Friday night at Giants stadium.

The Magpies suffered another injury blow when impressive youngster Will Kelly (elbow) was seriously injured late against the Hawks. They also had Jamie Elliott (shin) and Matthew Scharenberg (ribs) finish the game on the bench, but they are both expected to play against the Cats, while Josh Daicos could return from am ankle problem.

On the positive side, budding Magpies superstar Jordan De Goey is expected to be available after missing last week and heading to Perth ahead of his teammates.

Geelong got through their win over the Lions in good shape, though there is some doubt over midfielder Mitch Duncan  (hamstring), and could regain ruckman Rhys Stanley either this week or next.

Below we have highlighted our Geelong v Collingwood betting tips and winner prediction, for their AFL round 7 clash being played at Optus Stadium in Perth on Thursday from 8.10pm (AEST).

Geelong v Collingwood tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Cats v Magpies tips for Thursday’s game.

Tri-bet: Either team under 15.5 points

Rain is forecast for the next few days in Perth, making scoring even more difficult than it has been. These teams have played a lot of close ones in recent times, with the past four matches being decided by an average of about 12 points. No reason not to expect another tight battle.

Collingwood -3.5 points/match total over 102.5 points

We expect a low-scoring clash but the bookies have reacted savagely by setting the match total over/under at 102.5 points, when they have often been around the 130-point mark. If we get a few hours clear from the forecast rain we expect the match total to comfortably cover that mark.

Geelong v Collingwood prediction 16/7/20

The last time these two teams met, Collingwood defeated Geelong by 10 points in a 2019 qualifying final at the the MCG in front of 93,436 fans. These are very different circumstances but there is still a lot at stake in this truncated 2020 AFL season. Collingwood’s defence has been the best in the league and last week they coped well without dashing defender Jeremy Howe. The Cats may well provide a sterner test but we think the Magpies can get off to another flyer and then hold their opponents at bay. Our final prediction: Collingwood to win by 7 points.
