The Saints are the bookies’ favourites, priced at $1.69 to win, while the Demons are outsiders at $2.18. The $1.90 line has been set at 4.5 points.

St Kilda surprised punters in the opening round, when they upset GWS on the road last Sunday, despite missing several stars through injury.

Melbourne also made a positive start to their season after years of mediocrity, defeating Fremantle by 22 points on Saturday, in a clash they should have won by more.

The Saints are unlikely to regain any of their injured players, which means recruit Brad Crouch, skipper Jarryn Geary, Dan Hannebery and Rowen Marshall will all be watching from the sidelines.

The Demons have several players who may return from injury, with Jack Viney, Jake Melsham and Michael Hibberd all facing fitness tests. They will however have to wait longer for key forwards Sam Weideman and Ben Brown, with the pair at least a month away.

St Kilda Saints v Melbourne Demons betting tips

St Kilda and Melbourne promise to play a belter at Marvel Stadium on Saturday, with a 2-0 start on the line. Our AFL betting expert has found some value St Kilda v Melbourne tips:

Clayton Oliver to get 30+ possessions

Oliver is one of the best ball winners in the AFL and he looked to have returned to his best in the Demons’ win over Fremantle. Because of Oliver’s iffy disposal, opposition teams often don’t worry about tagging him, which can lead to huge possession counts and as we have seen in the past, he can do it week-in week-out. Oliver is only paying $1.50 to reach the 30-touch mark, but we think this is an absolute lock.

Jack Lonie to kick 2+ goals

Melbourne key position defenders Steven May and Jake Lever are among the best in the business and were great in the opening round, finally having overcome injury problems. This means we are looking to the Saints’ smalls to kick a winning score. Lonie was great last week and we think he can carry on with it this week at the juicy price of $3 to kick 2+ goals.

St Kilda vs Melbourne prediction 27/1

This is truly a 50-50 game with the injuries that the Saints have at the moment, which has us leaning towards not betting straight out on a winner in this one. Our advice? Take the Demons because we mark it much closer to even money than the bookies, which offers more value to punters, although you may need your rosary beads to get them home. Our final St Kilda v Melbourne prediction? Demons by three points.
