Carlton v Collingwood betting tips, prediction and odds; AFL Rd 14 preview

Welcome to our Carlton v Collingwood betting tips, prediction and odds analysis for their AFL round 14 clash at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues and Magpies are traditional rivals but this is the first time they have met away from the MCG in 20 years. It is also probably the most important match between these teams in that time and you can expect no quarter to be asked or given.

At the time of writing Carlton were sitting in 11th place, while the Magpies were in seventh, but there was only six points between the teams and Blues have a match in hand.

A loss for the Blues would be a huge blow to their chances of returning to the finals under coach David Teague, while the Magpies can forget about top four and possibly even finals if they don’t win.

Collingwood are coming off a comfortable win over North Melbourne on Monday night at the Gabba, while Carlton have had an extra few days between games since their 33-point win over the Gold Coast last Friday week.

That could be telling late, with the Magpies already having a hefty injury toll and also only having four days to prepare for their next match against the Lions, who will be coming off the bye. It’s a particularly inequitable part of the fix but such is the way in this truncated season.

Though it’s also a rough stretch for the Blues, who are coming off more rest but then must face GWS on Thursday night. The fates of Carlton and Collingwood in 2020 could be decided over a five-day stretch; this part of the draw looms as a massive leg-up to the Lions, particularly and also GWS.

The Magpies have had some good news on the selection front with leading goal-kicker Brody Mihocek ready to resumed after concussion.

The Magpies have also included out-of-form forward Jaidyn Stephenson, among five changes from last week’s team. They also brought back the Brown brothers, Callum and Tyler, while regaining youngster Issac Quaynor, who suffered a nasty gash to his leg against the Swans.

Making way for that handful are Flynn Appleby (injured), Levi Greenwood (managed), Steele Sidebottom (leaving hub to be at birth of first child), veteran Travis Varcoe and rookie Trey Ruscoe, who were both omitted.

The Blues have called in Cameron Polson and Paddy Dow, to replace Matthew Cottrell  and Sam Petrevski-Seton, with super-sized midfielder Matthew Kennedy (calf) and forward Mitch McGovern (hamstring) at least another week away.

Carlton v Collingwood tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Blues v Magpies tips for Sunday’s game.

Collingwood -2.5 points/match total under 117.5 points

Carlton were impressive in their most recent win over Gold Coast when they should have won by even more than five goals. We expect this to be fairly tight, as Collingwood will want to make it a low-scoring scrap as their forward line has struggled for cohesion. They are still a tough side to break down and might have a little too much prowess in defence this time.

Tri-bet: either team by under 15.5 points

If you don’t like the look of the match total over/unders, consider backing either team to win by less than 15.5 points. We just can’t see the Pies blowing away the Blues and vice-versa. Even though the Pies have dominated in recent years against their greatest rivals, seldom have the matches been blowouts

Carlton Blues v Collingwood Magpies prediction 30/8/2020

Collingwood have won 10 of the past 12 matches between these two sides but there is little doubt the Blues are a rapidly developing side. They are not there yet though, and we like the look of the Magpies defence, with players such as Jack Crisp and Brayden Maynard solid defenders and also dangerous moving the ball forward. We expect nothing less than a torrid battle, with the weather not the usual perfect winter’s day in Brisbane and some rain forecast. Our final Carlton v Collingwood tip: Magpies by eight points.
