Magpies v Suns betting tips, prediction and odds; AFL round 7 preview 2021

Welcome to our Collingwood v Gold Coast betting tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL round 17 clash at the Gabba on Monday night.

The Magpies are in a fight for their finals life and can secure a top eight position with a victory over the much-improved Gold Coast.

While other finals contenders such as Brisbane, West Coast and Richmond suffered key injuries, the Magpies appear to be getting some troops back at the right time. They include star ball-winner Adam Treloar and Jordan De Goey to return from injury for their first games since rounds 10 and seven respectively.

The Magpies are in seventh position and a loss would leave them vulnerable to slipping outside the top eight with a tough final-round clash against Port Adelaide to come.

Gold Coast were thrashed by 45 points against Brisbane on Wednesday, in a clash that appeared to signal that the young Suns, who have been a big improver in 2020, are beginning to tire. This could be telling here and Collingwood last played on Friday, September 4, giving them a significant advantage in rest days.

Collingwood are heavy favourites with AFL bookies at $1.31, while the Suns are outsiders in the betting at $3.50. The $1.90 line at Unibet has been set at 22.5 after being as short as 17.5 points earlier in the week.

The Suns, chasing their sixth win for the year, have recalled veteran Jarrod Harbrow, Nick Holman and Sean Lemmens. Ben Ainsworth (illness), Connor Budarick (injured) and Sam Flanders (omitted) go out of the line-up.

Travis Varcoe rounds out the Magpies’ inclusions for the clash, in which they will celebrate the 150th and 100th games of Jack Crisp and Josh Thomas. They lose running machine Tom Phillips (hamstring) and have dropped ruckman Max Lynch and youngster Jaidyn Stephenson.

Collingwood v Gold Coast tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Magpies v Suns tips for Monday’s game.

Mason Cox to kick 2+ goals

Collingwood forward Mason Cox spent most of this season out of their team, but has forced his way back the past month. The 211cm giant is probably playing for his Magpies future and while he has not set the world on fire, he has given his team a target for his smalls to pivot around. With the Suns’ inexperienced key defenders, Cox could cause trouble in the air, especially with De Goey back to draw much of the attention. Cox is paying $2.50 to score 2+ goals at Unibet.

Possessions betting tips

Collingwood are conservative with injuries such as the hamstring suffered by Adam Treloar. You can almost guarantee that at this time of the year, when they reintroduce a player of his class they will be 100% fit and ready to go. We’ve seen Treloar come in cold and fire before. He is very short, at $1.83, to gather 30+ touches. Collingwood’s usual suspects Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams and Jack Crisp are others to consider in possessions betting. On the Suns side of the ledger, Hugh Greenwood has been a consistent ball-winner, but they tend to spread the load around and are not an ideal team for this type of bet.

Jordan De Goey first goal-scorer

De Goey is paying $8.50 to kick the first goal of the game in his return from a hand injury. First goal-scorer betting is not a market we usually recommend, but we can just see the star Magpie making a mark early. Unibet has extensive betting available on the first goal-scorer market.

Izak Rankine to kick 2+ goals

Young star Izak Rankine could hardly have been more impressive this season and is definitely a player on the rise. He is paying $3.60 to kick 2+ goals. The Magpies have had trouble with crafty small forwards in the past and Rankine could be worth a try. Overall though, there is not much we like from a betting perspective in Suns colours this time out.

Collingwood v Gold Coast prediction 14/9/2020

Gold Coast are an exciting outfit and probably have the best young talent in the competition. Without even mentioning the injured Matt Rowell, the likes of Izak Rankine, Noah Anderson and Ben King should have Suns fans salivating. An off-season acquisition of another experienced midfielder like Brad Crouch could put them firmly into the finals conversation next year. But on this occasion they are running into a Magpies team that appears to be getting players back at the right time and might have beaten Brisbane last time out, if not for some poor skills. We’re very confident that the Magpies will cover the 22.5 line in this contest in a game that means little to the Suns. Our final Collingwood v Gold Coast prediction? Magpies by 32 points.
