Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs betting tips, prediction & odds; AFL round 17 preview 2020

Welcome to our Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs betting tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL round 17 clash at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

While Hawthorn are out of the running for the finals, the results have fallen in such a way that this match is enormously important for Western Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were 10th on the ladder heading into Sunday’s match, but a win would put them at least temporarily in seventh spot and in control of their own finals destiny. They face Fremantle in Cairns in the last round in Cairns next Sunday and two wins from these two game will ensure they reach the finals.

The Dogs have been priced as short-priced favourites around $1.31 against the Hawks ($3.45) with the $2 line with PlayUp set at 20.5 points.

The bad news for coach Luke Beveridge and his Dogs is that they have been dominated by Hawthorn in recent times, with Alastair Clarkson’s Hawks winning 10 of the past 12 meetings between the teams. The Dogs, however, won the most recent meeting between the teams by 19 points in round two last season.

Hawthorn also have some impressive inclusions for this game in ruckman Ben McEvoy, midfielder Jaeger O’Meara and veteran Shaun Burgoyne, who this week signed on for another season. The Hawks also included Finn Maginness, son of former Hawks premiership player Scott , for his first game.

The Hawks have lost tough midfielder James Worpel to a season-ending AC joint injury, rested Daniel Howe and dropped Changkuoth Jiath and Josh Morris.

Western Bulldogs have made two changes, bringing in two former Hawks in Matthew Suckling and Taylor Duryea. The Dogs dropped goal sneak Sam Lloyd and Will Hayes.

Both teams come into the game off seven-day breaks, with the Hawks last Sunday losing by 14 points to St Kilda, and the Bulldogs beating West Coast by two points in an epic contest.

Hawthorn v Bulldogs tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Hawks v Bulldogs tips for Sunday’s game.

Hawthorn +20.5 points at $2

Rising Australian bookmaker PlayUp is offering $2 fixed lines to eligible customers for the rest of the AFL and NRL seasons. While they have a maximum bet of $250 it’s definitely worth taking advantage of in the run home. We think the Hawks will be a much tougher proposition than expected for the Dogs and are happy to take the $2.

Jack Gunston most goals in selected group

PlayUp is offering odds for the top goal-scorer in a group of six players. The group for this match includes Dogs Aaron Naughton ($2.70), Mitch Wallis ($3.30) and Josh Bruce ($6), and Hawks Jack Gunston ($4.50), Luke Breust ($7.50) and Chad Wingard ($9). We love the fact that Gunston is so reliable in front of goals and he always looms as the Hawks’ biggest threat.

Hawthorn Hawks vs Western Bulldogs prediction 13/9/2020

The Hawks are down and out in 2020 but they can certainly shape the make-up of the final eight, as they did last season when they caused a huge upset beating West Coast in Perth to scupper their top-four hopes. The alarm bells should be ringing among Dogs fans, but we are certain they will be up for this game. While they do not match up well generally against the Hawks, the Dogs should have just a little to much firepower around the ball. O’Meara and McEvoy coming in is huge for Hawthorn, but that is tempered somewhat by the loss of the prolific Worpel. Our final Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs prediction? Bulldogs by five points.
